Misdirected Confidence

We have replaced biblical principles through seemingly harmless traditional practices. Ever been to a birthday party where the candles are perfectly placed representing their age? Then someone happily presents it with candles flaming. Most everyone has been to one or has watched on television birthday celebrations. These are special and fun events as friends and family members gather to celebrate. What happens for many is an encouragement to make a wish then blow out the candles. Wow what a fun time it is, but wait a moment and let’s consider what has just happened with the wish making. First of all the word [wish] for many carries a certain component of uncertainty, a maybe it will and maybe it wont concept. But if we will blow out the candles we have sealed the deal for assurance. I’m not trying to be critical or judgmental about birthday traditions, I’m merely using this as an example. The bible teaches us that faith is the substance of things hoped for and the evidence of things not perceivable to the senses. Certain things we do as a cultural practice is contrary to biblical truths. They may not be sinful but misdirects our confidence from the word of God and places it other things. Blowing out a candle will not bring to pass a wish but faith established on the word of God is our assurance. Some have thrown medicine away with hopes of being healed. They think because they threw it away now they will be healed. Instead they remain sick because their confidence was in the action and not on the word of God. How about the rhyme of star light star bright the first star I see tonight…. Making a wish upon a star is putting our confidence in the wrong place and on the wrong thing. We should be more mindful of what we are saying, doing and believing. God is faithful who has promised, and our faith should rest in Him and His word.
